MTA to begin replacing NYC's subway turnstiles with modern fare gates
Briefly

The MTA plans to introduce modern fare gates at 20 subway stations to address significant fare evasion, which costs them over $700 million yearly. This initiative includes testing designs from four companies, replacing traditional turnstiles with glass sliding doors that are harder to bypass. Past attempts to test fare gates faced criticism due to performance issues. Funding for a more extensive overhaul has been allocated but awaits approval from state lawmakers, highlighting ongoing challenges in the agency's efforts to modernize and secure fare collection.
"These gates are the cutting edge and are aimed at both ensuring fare compliance and making the system more accessible and easier to use," MTA construction chief Jamie Torres-Springer said.
Transit officials laid out a plan to test out new fare gate designs from four different companies at the selected group of stations.
