Two New York Democratic representatives, Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman, were refused entry to inspect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holding cells in Manhattan. ICE officials claimed the location was a 'processing center' and not a detention center, thus barring inspections. Concerns arose over the treatment of immigrants, notably reports of individuals sleeping on floors. Nadler and Goldman had previously given ICE notice of their inspection plans, hoping for a different outcome compared to prior representatives. Nadler hinted at potential legal action if their inspection efforts fail.
"We are very concerned about what conditions these immigrants are being held in," Goldman said in a press conference after his visit. "What are they [ICE] hiding?"
ICE Deputy Field Director Bill Joyce told the representatives that some immigrants slept overnight on floors and benches at the facilities.
Nadler said he'd consider pursuing legal action, if further efforts to inspect the cells were unsuccessful.
Joyce said the site was not a detention center, which U.S. House representatives are legally allowed to inspect, but rather an off-limits 'processing center.'
