Any Gutierrez-Rebollo, 27, of Oakland, took the most legal responsibility for the Oct. 8, 2022 killing of 29-year-old religious student Isamaeli Eli Mata'afa, pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter with the expectation to be sentenced to 14 years on Feb. 5. Co-defendant Michael Monrroy-Ramos, 26, of Union City, pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon for an eight-year prison term, also scheduled to be handed down on Feb. 5, records show.
Police described the Oakland shooting as a gangland assassination, where three cars pulled up with four gunmen inside, who opened fire and killed 24-year-old Bert Brigham III. The shooting occurred more than four years ago, and though police say they caught three suspected Funktown gang associates with guns used in the shooting the very next day, everyone has avoided charges until now. On Jan. 7, Alameda County prosecutors charged a 25-year-old suspect, Hanif McLeod, with being one of the four gunmen who killed Brigham.
The shooting, captured on video, occurred on the 6900 block of International Boulevard in East Oakland. Black accused 55-year-old Roger Johnson, of Hayward, of stepping on his shoe and showed Johnson the butt of an AR-style weapon he had at his waistband, which the defense said was meant to deter Johnson from escalating it into a fight. Instead, Johnson attempted to grab the gun and Black allegedly shot at Johnson during the fracas, killing Johnson's friend, 55-year-old James Stephens, according to court records.
It occurred at City Hall Plaza in downtown Oakland, around 4:30 p.m. Johnson and Williams squared off to fight over an ongoing dispute, but Williams allegedly grabbed a metal chair and swung at Johnson, hitting him in the back of the head. Johnson allegedly responded by pulling a pistol and shooting Williams in the abdomen. That's when police say McClain pulled out a pistol and shot Johnson in the foot.

According to a report from NBC News, Laney College Athletic Director John Beam was in critical condition following the shooting.
Gregory Szugyi, who also goes by Gregory Dubelle, had been charged with murdering 36-year-old Antonio Poole in an April 2024 shooting on Kennedy Street in Oakland. Police said at the time that Poole was shot with a rifle, and an officer found him lying dead in the street. A witness later told police that when he asked another onlooker to call 911, the person profanely declined, claiming Poole had just tried to rob him, according to court records.
OAKLAND One of the alleged gunman in a wild 2023 double homicide has been sentenced to probation and time he had already served in jail, court records show. In a plea deal with prosecutors, Sir Cameron Young, 23, pleaded no contest to an assault weapon possession charge in exchange for the probation sentence. Prosecutors dropped other charges of assault and gun possession as part of the deal, court records show.
