The tension of "Bridgerton" exists, like the tension of all great escapist television, between the push and pull of disappearing into a glamorous world (just for entertainment consumption!) and not worrying too much about some of the darker bits that might flit across our screens. Now in its fourth season, Jess Brownell's smash hit Netflix series ( based on Julia Quinn's novels) continues to explore that tension as it tackles its much-anticipated Benedict and Sophie-centric season.

The sequel, directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, again features positive lessons about acceptance and plenty of jokes. Critics are giving two paws up to the film's messaging - even in the face of Disney's rollbacks to DEI policies in a Trump-dominated culture - but are also divided by the interspecies chemistry between the two leads.

The researchers note that although the concept is frequently used within Western popular culture to describe an 'intense connection,' there is less supporting academic research, partially due to the lack of a comprehensive definition of the term.
