Mass Effect has been held up as a benchmark for not only the action RPG, but for thought-provoking, high-concept science fiction in gaming as a whole.

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Whether you're launching a gadget, premiering a hit movie, or simply going on a date, there is little room for error. For businesses, this is especially true when offering something brand new. It's easy for us to forget that the mighty Sony PlayStation was, at one time, an untested product. And soon after its release, with everything on the line, it dropped one of the most respected and influential RPGs of all time.

In 2023, Final Fantasy Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida indicated his distaste for the term JRPG, saying that Square Enix doesn't go into its games trying to make a JRPG. "We go into them thinking we're going to create RPGs," he explained. Before this, Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami, who worked with MonolithSoft on Xenoblade Chronicles X, echoed similar sentiments, saying, "I feel like we just make RPGs, I don't need anyone to add the 'J', personally."

As I've written before, my first gaming love was RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, and I rediscovered board games as another way to experience that type of exploration and adventure. Many RPG-adjacent dungeon crawlers are crowdfunded, and while these games were nailing combat-heavy dungeon crawling and leveling up, other RPG-elements were often missing. Crowdfunded board games are also best known for being over-produced games that often miss their delivery date.

The spinoff of a popular first-person RPG series gets handed off to a new studio that's never made a first-person game before. Envisioned as an expansion, it grows into a full game, though its developer has only 18 months to finish it. It launches with a host of bugs that make it frustrating if not unplayable for large parts of its audience. That might sound like a nightmare, but instead, it ended up as a nearly universally beloved entry in the series,

The latest edition of Steam Next Fest is over, and Steam has shared its list of the 50 most-played demos from the week-long event. This year's list was pretty heavy with horror, adventure, RPG, and simulation games. And surprisingly, only a few roguelike and racing titles. One of the most unusual titles was Final Sentence, a battle-royale typing game that has a fatal ending for any player who can't keep up with the pace.

New text and UI game localizations into Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian, bringing the total number of supported languages to 19.

Fantasy games take you away from any semblance of the real world, instead trading in unique worlds and universes, often featuring magic, but sometimes lean into fantasy technology as well. These games are often in the RPG genre, and many of them feature open-worlds as well. The most important and defining aspect of fantasy games are their settings though, featuring magical creatures and special powers.

Unicorn Overlord is a hard game to categorize, blending real-time strategy with turn-based combat elements and auto-battling, creating a unique tactical experience.

Atlus has not officially acknowledged Persona 6, but development on the game has been in progress for years and there are indications of its impending release.
