has had many lives: valet parking for the now-shuttered Nordstrom, the site of a proposed development that would have provided 494 units of housing if the city hadn't rejected it in 2021 and, in the early months of the Lurie administration, a " triage center" that police hoped would serve as a one-stop shop for getting people into drug treatment, getting people bus tickets out of town or just getting them arrested more efficiently.
Back when London Breed was still mayor, her idea to clamp down on the notorious drug trade and nighttime street circus that pervaded the Tenderloin District was to shut down corner liquor stores earlier in parts of the Tenderloin, and prohibit them from doing business between midnight and 5 am. That proposal got passed into law in June 2024 (taking effect the following month), and liquor stores on this 20-block area of the Tenderloin are now forced to close at midnight.
SoMa's latest green tea newcomer is Cafe Nagomi, a takeout counter specializing in matcha drinks and soft serve. On top of a traditional matcha latte, they also have versions with white chocolate, hojicha, and, as with other recent matcha spots, an einspanner-theirs is with strawberry.
Meal delivery service-turned-restaurant, Yuja Kitchen, has landed in SoMa. The all-day fast-casual spot is all about Asian grain bowls and salads with Thai basil pork, shaking beef, and teriyaki. You can also grab craft beers and house-made frozen yogurt to round out your order. The airy space has a bunch of tables and window seating if you don't feel like taking your food on the road.
Join curator Trisha Lagaso Goldberg for this unique opportunity to learn more about the historical context and creativity of the Filipino community in SoMa.
