Polar vortices, while not new, are becoming more severe due to rising Arctic temperatures. Evidence shows a common pattern in their frequency and intensity.

A plume of warm air will sink southwards from neighbouring Paraguay on Monday, lingering through Tuesday, before giving way to a cold front on Wednesday.

"Bottled water was one of our biggest saviors for everything from quenching thirst to maintaining some semblance of hygiene when times got tough."

The snow moon, peaking this week, is named for the heavy snowfall typical of winter and is expected during significant snowstorms across the U.S.

"When the polar jet stream zips more or less evenly around the Arctic, the continental U.S. and other midlatitude locations remain relatively warm because it keeps cold air trapped to the north."

Watertown has received more than 5.5 feet of snow so far this season, while Constableville had 2 feet of new snow by Tuesday evening, marking significant snowfall in New York.

"My crews were trying to get to some of these vehicle accidents and basically just couldn't get there," said Truckee Fire Chief Kevin McKechnie.

"Our forecasts are showing tight margins on the electricity system for Wednesday evening between 4-7pm. This is a routine tool that we use most winters, and means we are asking market participants to make any additional generation capacity they may have available."
