A week after its monumental upset of Penn State, UCLA could get some answers about the trajectory of its season. A road game against an opponent with plenty of its own urgency should tell the Bruins whether they're on the road to redemption or merely picking up speed on a route to nowhere. Michigan State (3-2 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) needs a win as badly as UCLA (1-4, 1-1)

First-year girls' basketball coach Will Burr of Harvard-Westlake High has already concluded more than a month before the season begins that 6-foot-2 freshman Lucia Khamenia is going to be an impact player. She's the sister of former Harvard-Westlake All-American Nikolas Khamenia, who is now a freshman at Duke. Burr said Khamenia can play different positions because of her size and versatility, go inside or make threes like her brother.

When he first started spreading the word about Waymond Jordan, Mike Bennett figured the film would speak for itself. The Escambia High coach had been in the South Florida preps scene long enough to know what he was seeing from his new running back. "Just watching him run the football for the first time, he was amazing," Bennett said. He figured scholarship offers would roll in soon enough.

"She's a true pleasure to coach," San Pedro flag coach Victor Tuberosi said. "Her IQ is what makes her different than others. As a coach, you can call the play, but what impresses me most is her decision-making."

Derwin Henderson was not intending to coach this season. He hadn't been a head coach since 2019 at Hawthorne. But he lives in the Inland Empire, and Rialto High kept asking him to take the open position. He finally relented, and big changes are already taking place. Rialto is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Ontario, Temecula Prep and Indio. That's notable because the team was 0-10 last season and 1-9 in 2023.

Crenshaw High has started its football season 2-0 but has done so without longtime head coach Robert Garrett.

During Stafford's first throwing session, the 17th-year pro looked "awesome." However, Stafford did not begin practicing as scheduled after that session.
