A Fine Balance, adapted by playwright and novelist Anosh Irani, will premiere as a play of the same name from in late August. Set in mid-1970s India, A Fine Balance follows four people—a widowed seamstress, a student, and two tailors—who find themselves thrown together in a small Bombay apartment when the government declares a 'state of internal emergency.'

The actors bought a gated, traditional-style estate with five bedrooms and 5 1/2 bathrooms in about 6,000 square feet. The home, built in the '50s, has a formal living room with a fireplace, a kitchen with a breakfast area, a bonus room with a fireplace, a loft bedroom that could be used as a playroom or office, and a master bedroom suite with a sitting area.

Baz Luhrmann reinvented Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as a gangbanger love tragedy of the present day, with Mexico City standing in for an imaginary urban place called Verona Beach. The result was a terrific success, more of a success, I suspect, than Luhrmann ever had again; it was irreverent and questioning in just the right way, a sunburst of energy, but instinctively respectful to the story.

The Shitheads is part period piece, part family drama and part allegorical epic. It unfolds at some time in prehistory (10,000 - 50,000 BC, to be exact). Nomadic hunter-gatherers coexist with a family of cannibalistic cave dwellers who justify their eating habits by dehumanising their human prey. Hunter-gatherers are 'shitheads', they say - inferior, stupid, without expansive interior lives. One of these cave-dwellers, a straight-talking fighter named Clare (Jacoba Williams - Vera), meets Greg (Jonny Khan - Statues), an endearing, simple-minded gatherer.

The Donmar's programme is as eclectic as ever, with the opening play being (Apr 18-Jun 6). US actor-writer-director Fran Kranz's adaptation of his own hit indie film is about two sets of couples - the parents of the victim of a high school shooting, and the parents of the shooter - who attempt a painful reconciliation years after the event. Carrie Cracknell directs a top cast that includes Adeel Akhtar, Amari Bacchus, Monica Dolan, Paul Hilton, Lyndsey Marshal, Rochelle Rose and Susie Trayling.
