The humble bicycle bell is generally acknowledged to have been invented by John Richard Dedicoat in my home city of Birmingham, UK, back in the late 1800's. On the whole, the bell's design has remained largely the same for the last century or so. The need for cyclists to alert other road users and pedestrians of their presence to ensure the safety of all has long been present, and that's exactly the reason cyclists fit and use bike bells.
After riding more than 150,000 miles, I've picked up a few lessons the hard way. Some came from near misses in traffic, others from my own mistakes. I can tell you this: these rules aren't written by a cycling committee. They're written on the road, in sweat and sometimes blood. Take them seriously, and you'll ride longer, safer, and with a little more joy.

I remember one moment clearly. I was riding a quiet stretch of road when I saw a car veering over the white line behind me - heading straight toward me. Because of the mirror, I had just enough time to move off the shoulder...that car would have hit me.
The City of London council announced that black cabs will be permitted to drive through Bank junction again as part of an 18-month trial, citing the need for increased access for those unable to use public transport.
Studies have shown that a flashing rear light during daylight hours can reduce the chance of a collision by as much as 19%. It cuts through visual clutter in a way a static object simply can't.
The Daily News apparently forgot that opening a door into traffic - aka 'dooring' - is illegal, instead allowing the killer van driver whose illegal act killed a cyclist in SoHo to say he was sad.
The Royal Parks charity, overseer of London's royal parks, is promoting a considerate cycling campaign urging cyclists to adhere to a 20mph speed limit to enhance safety.
People who behave like that are not welcome on the race as far as I'm concerned. Cycling is a sport where you can get close to the athletes and that makes us unique compared to many other sports.
