A 20-year-old Syrian refugee has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for attempted murder and other charges. A 25-year-old man has been handed a life sentence for attempting to murder a uniformed Army officer in a "vicious and deliberate" attack near a barracks in Kent. Fr Paul Murphy was stabbed seven times with a hunting knife while attempting to drive into Renmore Barracks in Galway on the morning of August 15 2024. Fr Murphy, who required surgery for his injuries and lost some feeling in his arms, said he forgave his attacker before hugging him in the courtroom following the trial. His attacker, who was 16 at the time and cannot be identified, was arrested at the scene after being restrained by soldiers.
Judge Gallacher described the attack as "seriously alarming," noting that Kastrati chased PC Cowan for a significant distance while revving the chainsaw. "PC Cowan thought that if he did not get away from you, you would chop off his limbs and kill him," the judge said. He added that much of the incident was captured on CCTV and mobile footage and warned that the potential harm could have been catastrophic.
A coach at Elmhurst Middle School was standing on campus during a break when two men pulled up in a Chevrolet Tahoe, wearing ski masks, and jumped out of the car, according to police. "You got my cousin jumped," one of them allegedly told the man. "We're going to smoke you." A month later, on Dec. 15, one of the men made good on his threats, police said. The coach was walking on 98th Avenue during the day when a man pulled up in, asked the coach if he worked at Elmhurst, then opened fire twice. Both shots missed the coach, who called police after the gunman's Chevrolet Tahoe sped off.

Following the incident, detectives immediately began working at pace to understand the circumstances and quickly had four men arrested in connection to the incident.
Authorities said the violence stemmed from a fight between both 12-year-olds just before 3 p.m. inside Betsy Head Park, near Thomas S. Boyland Street and Dumont Avenue in Brownsville. When officers responded to a 911 call at around 3 p.m., they found the woman with multiple stab wounds to her back and a laceration on her arm, the Globe reported. The victim's husband was standing outside the bathroom and waiting for her with their other two children, police told CBS News.
Much like a fatal stabbing involving teenagers at San Jose's other large mall, Santana Row, back in February, the alleged shooter in this case did not actually know the men he allegedly intended to shoot, but he perceived them to be members of a rival street gang, just because of the colors they were wearing. (The 15-year-old boy killed in February, who was not a gang member, was allegedly targeted because he was wearing a red jacket on Valentine's Day.)
The victim had met and befriended a woman known as Chris while in Mexico about a month and a half before the incident, prosecutors said. The relationship between the two, which was non-romantic, continued after they returned home to East Palo Alto, with the pair meeting at a local McDonald's and talking over social media, prosecutors said. Chris confided in the victim about domestic issues she was having with her ex-partner.
